Early Eve

Trees part early morning,

giving way to the sun

as it breaks through

each segment of leaf;

children play at its roots,

kicking dirt, digging up remains,

playing with nature

until the curtain falls.

Night opens its arms,

embracing the day

as it does so,

hugging the sunlight, warming

its cold bones

with every touch;

children watch the moons

fruitless calls, night has come,

although, as ever,

the day is not done,

business must go on.
